Born July 4, 1996 -- Australian Cattle Dog mix
One day when I was at work in Austin, Texas, a co-worker who knew we missed having a dog since our golden retriever passed away asked me if we would please take their blue heeler mix Xena. Her husband was encouraging their sons to tease Xena unmercifully, and she was becoming a neurotic mess. So we adopted Xena at 9 months old. I didn't know anything about blue heelers, and we didn't have a fenced yard, so when we let her out to go potty, she would take off to chase bunnies or whatever smelled good to her. We lived in ranch country so that was not a good idea. We eventually had a fence installed, and would throw a tennis ball for Xena until we got tired--she never did, even in triple-digit heat!
